Dr Amadors book I am not sick, I don't need help, was one of the first books I read when my daughter become ill, unfortunately we were in such a crisis I did not put any of these methods to use. I spent two years trying to get my daughter to understand she was unwell and needed help, which most of us probably know, does not work and it only made our situation worse.
I still can't say I am great at this method of Listen, Empathise, Agree and Partner but I try and work on it each day. Just knowing the principles of this method has been a huge help in communicating, preventing arguments and having so much more empathy for my daughter.
Dr Amadors book also provides a lot of information on anosognosia which is so important to understand, when caring for someone with lack of insight and refusing treatment.

(I often and still do feel so unheard when trying to communicate with mental health teams and I often think this was how my daughter felt when she was trying to let me know what she was experiencing and in response we tried to convince her otherwise. It is truly meaningful to feel like someone has really heard and listened to you.)
